APPEARANCE

Seen for the first time as Ullman and Watson are approaching Jack in the lobby for the tour. Passed a few times thereafter. Also seen at length beside Summer of ’42. Transports to the 2nd entrance for two passes by Wendy and Jack.

IDENTITY

Some sources extend the title to include the palindromic location: Laval (which is a 10 minute drive from Montreal). Which tells us that the piece is either depicting the Thousand Islands River or Prairies River, one of the two that hug the island city.

SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE

Krieghoff (who we discussed before, here) often painted many extremely similar paintings, shuffling minor details, so this piece has a few “twin/sister paintings” we might call them, which I noticed on a recent trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Jack gets closest to this image in his last fully sane moment within the hotel, studying the maze model, so the image of a family heading into a frozen river is fairly apt. He’s stepping off the ledge. But also, the other painting which depicts a frozen river is intimately connected to Hallorann’s murder, so it’s almost like Jack’s finally committing to becoming the minotaur here.

There’s also another painting, first seen in this area, that might have the same title, but in German, Winterlandschaft. If I’m right about that piece, then both of these pieces would depict frosty landscapes right up the road from the 1976 summer and winter Olympics.
