ROUND ONE STARTROUND THREE STARTSPECIAL: STORY ROOM

  • “She came in through the bathroom window” – Grady assuring Jack that his little girls are “around somewhere” as they stand in an impossible bathroom (in case you forgot, this bathroom should extend back into the area occupied by the Gold Room, by the context clues we get when Jack and Grady enter).
  • “Protected by a silver spoon/But now she sucks her thumb and wanders/By the banks of her own lagoon” – The “silver spoon” line goes well with Grady’s attire. The “sucks her thumb” line brings to mind how Danny is sucking his thumb when he emerges from 237. On “wanders” we get this shot of the Suite 3 bathroom window, which Danny will be going out of, and Wendy will be getting stuck in.
  • In the last round of this moment, backward Wendy is leaving Tony/Danny in this very spot, to go fight Jack.
  • “Didn’t anybody tell her?/Didn’t anybody see?” – Jack is springing the trap on Grady, about how he knows about Grady’s dark history. About chopping up his little girls. Grady will deny this, and pull Jack down the ultimate rabbit hole of gullibility, but who did see this event? Is it the boy zombie Jack is attempting to mind-read right now?
  • “Sunday’s on the phone to Monday/Tuesday’s on the phone to me” – On Tuesday (CLOSING DAY) Hallorann warns Danny to stay out of 237, and then on TUESDAY Danny touched 237 and got a flash of the twins, and on this backward Monday, Danny is one scene away from entering 237, and Jack is about to quote the Grady girls at his son.
  • Monday also means “moon day” and the word lunatic means “moon person”, so I love the way Jack’s growing lunacy occurs in two such different ways here.
  • “And though she thought I knew the answer/Well I knew what I could not say” – Danny can’t say that he doesn’t want to get nearer to zombie Jack, and Grady doesn’t want to say that Jack’s right, because it’ll spoil the plot.
  • “And so I quit the police department/And got myself a steady job” – Danny’s coming for his fire truck. Bit of a stretch, but still. Also, Grady is here saying “But you, are the caretaker here. You’ve always been the caretaker.” That’s a pretty steady job, eh? One you get to work for eternity.
  • “And though she tried her best to help me” – In this scene, mirror Danny is going to try his best to help his dad see the truth of his situation. Which is insane, given the entirety of the drama. This boy doesn’t owe his father jack shit, but still he’s gonna do what he can.
  • “Didn’t anybody tell her?/Didn’t anybody see?” – I like to read this moment generally as Danny walking in on the Grady-Jack tryst, so in that regard, it’s as if the Danny on both sides of the mirrorverse here is feeling a deep lack of trust in his father. As backward Danny creeps back out of Suite 3, there’s a sense of him seeing the growing collusion between these monstrous men.
  • As with most of the song transitions, there’s a cute vibe to this finale, as mirror Danny shuts the door softly. It’s a bit like he’s shutting the door on the possibility of his father not going crazy. And sure enough the next bit is where Jack gets sucked completely into Grady’s worldview.
  • That has a nice, slight comparison to the last time we heard this track (round 1), which was when Danny was triking past 237 for the second time, and noticing it. Danny is enticed by 237, much like Jack is enticed by Grady. These are both the first of two instances where Danny and Jack are tempted by the worst respective forces the hotel throws at them.
  • Also, this is where there’s a gap in the two sections of the final “medley”, so, after five continuous tracks, there is a profound sense of closure here, to be seconded by the album’s grand finale. Recall, too, how at the beginning of the medley, backward Jack was shutting down the lights in the Gold Room, which also had a sense of closure. At the end of the round 2 album, we’ll be fading away from the shot of Wendy collapsing upon Tony/Danny, realizing that her son is fully shut away from her, while backward Wendy in that moment will be realizing that the phone lines are down.
