APPEARANCE
Seen once, beside the dartboard in the games room (21:37-21:44 and 21:53-21:57).
HISTORIC/SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE
The giant B in the ad is cut off at the top, and doesn’t connect at the bottom, due to the style of the piece, so it ends up looking like a giant 13. The only score Danny makes on the dart board is a 16. These are significant numbers in the Treachery of Images analysis.
Bayer was an Austrian artist, credited as the last Bauhaus designer of all time, and who was a believer in the idea that the alphabet should be simplified (he designed his “fonetik alfabet” in 1959). He designed the typeface Bayer Universal as part of his Proposal for a Universal Typeface (Kubrick was a notorious lover of simple, elegant font designs). He designed an ad for a Third Reich tourist trap during the ’36 Olympics (the Olympics in which Jack Torrance participated), but was listed among the “Degenerate Art” artists the following year, and he fled, never to return. He later married the daughter of Mina Loy, a famous Dada artist (Dadaism is referenced on Abbey Road).
Broadmoor is a place and a hotel, which was designed by the same people who designed the Arizona Biltmore that Frank Lloyd Wright worked on. It sits in the shadow of Pikes Peak, which has a connection to the Sand Creek massacre.
Incidentally, I couldn’t find any credit for the SKI MONARCH poster, other than its relation to other Shining theorists. As for the place, Monarch is interesting for having a lodge built in 1939 called “The Inn Inferno”.
